Downspout Placement in Tulsa: Protecting Your Foundation From Clay Soil

Gutters get most of the attention, but the downspout is where the whole system either works or doesn't. A perfectly installed gutter run that dumps water two feet from the foundation is still causing damage – it's just moved the problem from the roofline to the foundation wall. On Tulsa's expansive clay soil, that's a bigger deal than it sounds: clay swells when saturated and shrinks when it dries out, and a downspout that keeps saturating the same narrow strip of ground next to the house accelerates exactly that cycle right where it can crack a foundation.

On a flat lot with correct grading (roughly a 2% slope away from the foundation for the first 10 feet), 4 feet is usually adequate. On a lot with reverse grading, minimal extensions won't cut it and water needs to be carried further, sometimes with a buried line, to actually clear the problem area.


Splash Blocks vs. Extensions vs. Buried Lines


Splash blocks

The simplest option – a shaped concrete or plastic block that spreads water out at the base of the downspout instead of letting it drill a hole in the mulch bed. Cheap and effective for short distances, but they don't move water very far and can shift out of position over time.


Flexible or rigid extensions

A length of pipe, either rigid or the flexible accordion style, that physically carries water further from the house before releasing it. These work well but sit on the surface, which means they're visible, can get run over by a mower, or kicked out of alignment.


Buried drain lines

The most permanent solution: solid PVC pipe run underground from the downspout base to a discharge point well away from the house, sometimes tied into a pop-up emitter or a French drain system. This is the right call for homes with limited yard space, hardscaping that a surface extension would need to cross, or persistent drainage problems that splash blocks and extensions haven't solved. It's also the cleanest-looking option since nothing sits above grade except the outlet.


Common Downspout Mistakes

  • Discharging onto a driveway or walkway, which creates ice patches during winter freezes and erodes joints over time

  • Extensions that get moved or removed for mowing and never put back, silently undoing the protection they were installed for

  • Downspouts tied together to save on extensions, overloading one outlet with more water than it can handle

  • No splash protection at all, which erodes mulch beds and can expose roots or undermine a walkway over a few seasons

  • Elbow clogs from debris that makes it past the gutter but jams at the first tight turn in the downspout, backing water up the whole run


Downspout Clogs vs. Gutter Clogs

A clog in the downspout itself behaves differently than a gutter clog – instead of overflow along a section of gutter, water backs up the entire downspout and can start overflowing at the top, right where it meets the gutter outlet, even though the gutter run itself is clear. The usual culprit is debris that made it through the gutter but jammed at the first elbow. A downspout strainer at the outlet catches this before it becomes a clog, especially useful on runs collecting leaves from mature post oaks and pecans common across older Tulsa neighborhoods.

Can too many downspouts tied together cause problems? Yes – combining runs into a single downspout or drain line without upsizing it can overwhelm that one outlet during a heavy storm, sending water back up and out at the connection point.


My downspout empties right onto the driveway – is that a problem? In winter, yes – it's a reliable way to create an ice patch right where people walk and park. Redirecting it, even with a simple angled extension, is a quick fix.
